NYC & COMPANY NAMES MoMA PS1 CULTURE SPOT FOR MAY 2012

—New York City’s Renowned Contemporary Art Museum Offers Monthlong 2-for-1 Admission—

New York City (May 1, 2012)—NYC & Company, New York City's marketing, tourism and partnership organization, today named MoMA PS1 its Culture Spot pick for May 2012. Culture Spot is a monthly program that highlights arts and cultural organizations across the five boroughs to encourage exploration by locals and visitors. Among the oldest and largest nonprofit art institutions in the country, MoMA PS1 features exhibits and events year-round that celebrate emerging artists, experimental ideas and adventurous new works. Formerly a New York City public school, the Long Island City space is an affiliate of The Museum of Modern Art, in Midtown Manhattan, that showcases cutting-edge projects and attracts an intrepid audience worldwide. To celebrate its Culture Spot designation, from May 1 to 31, MoMA PS1 will offer visitors 2-for-1 admission.

“With genre-defying exhibitions situated in every nook and cranny of the museum, MoMA PS1 continues to delight the adventurous art explorer,” said Annie Bergen, vice president of Arts and Cultural Programs at NYC & Company. “We’re proud to invite New Yorkers and visitors to take advantage of this special offer and experience the sense of wonder and imagination that permeates MoMA PS1.”

“MoMA PS1 is a world-renowned laboratory for contemporary practice—visual art, performance, film, architecture, music and dance,” said Klaus Biesenbach, director of MoMA PS1. “We are only minutes away from Manhattan on the subway, and yet you are literally in another world when you come here—another space, another time.”

Highlights of shows on exhibit at MoMA PS1 during the month of May include:

-     The first major assessment of works by Italian artist Lara Favaretto will open on May 3. Entitled Lara Favaretto: Just Knocked Out, the collection includes a dozen pieces from the past 15 years, as well as new items created specifically for the exhibition.

-     Max Brand: no solid footing — (trained) duck fighting a crow, the first museum solo exhibition of Max Brand, will also open on May 3. Brand paints with a wide variety of media, including sidewalk chalk, crayon, pencil, marker, spray paint, ballpoint pen, chlorine bleach, and oil and acrylic paints.

-     Darren Bader: Images is the first exhibition for the New York–based artist, which is on view through May 14. Bader works with the expanding boundaries of art’s use and circulation. Often using culture he appropriates from a range of media—film, music, text, digital images and work made by other visual artists—Bader treats such material as “ready mades” that he presents democratically within the framework of his exhibitions alongside found objects like fruits, furniture and sometimes live animals.

-     In conjunction with Kraftwerk — Retrospective 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 at MoMA, an eight-channel video and sound installation especially developed for the exhibition is on display in the MoMA PS1 Performance Dome through May 14. Kraftwerk is a renowned German group from the mid-1970s internationally known for their experimentation with sound and imagery. Their unique compositions feature multilingual vocals, robotic beats and computer speech.

-     From noon to 6pm on May 6 and May 13, MoMA PS1 will present Sunday Sessions, a mixture of artistic programming, including light, sound and music installations, lectures by world-renowned scholars, and special performances. Ticketed afternoon DJ sets by Questlove (May 6, 3–5:30pm) and Afrika Bambaataa (May 13, 3–6pm) in the MoMA PS1 Performance Dome will celebrate the exhibition Kraftwerk — Retrospective 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 and Kraftwerk’s extensive influence on electronically generated music.

-     On May 11, MoMA PS1 and HBO will host a preview screening of ME @ THE ZOO with Chris Crocker and directors Chris Moukarbel and Valerie Veatch. Tickets are free, but limited. Reserve your seat at momaps1.org/events.
