Weeklong Event Expected to Draw More Than 52,000 Visitors and Showcase More Than 2,000 Living Artists from 21 Countries
New York City
“New York City continues to be the pre-eminent center for international arts and culture—and no event exemplifies that more than The Armory Show and Armory Arts Week,” said NYC & Company CEO George Fertitta. “NYC & Company is pleased to be a partner of this event, which is expected to attract tens of thousands of international and domestic visitors to experience some of the world’s most renowned artists, museums and galleries throughout the five boroughs.”
“In ten years, The Armory Show has become an international institution,” said The Armory Show’s Executive Director Katelijne De Backer. “Because of our exclusive focus on contemporary art, artists, galleries, collectors, critics and curators from all over the world make New York their destination during Armory Week, reaffirming our city as the center of the art world.”
The Amory Show, which begins March 27, will be at the center of Armory Arts Week, which runs March 26–30. The Armory Show showcases more than 2,000 living artists from 160 galleries and not–for–profit organizations from around the world. Exhibitors from 39 cities in 21 countries will take part in an exhibition that encompasses the richness and diversity of the international art world as well as its most current trends.
For the first time, Armory Arts Week will also include VOLTA NY, a cutting–edge art fair bringing together 53 international artists and 52 galleries for its solo invitational exhibition. VOLTA NY will take place off 5th Avenue opposite the Empire State Building and will chart some of the most compelling directions in contemporary art today.
This year’s Armory Arts Week will include a variety of events throughout the five boroughs. The City will host companion shows including Art Now Fair, Bridge Art Fair, DIVA Art Fair, Pool Art Fair, Pulse New York, Red Dot Fair New York and Scope New York.
In addition, galleries in Williamsburg, Brooklyn will remain open until 11:00 pm on Saturday, March 29 and galleries on the Lower East Side will remain open from 12 to 6 pm and will have a guided walking tour starting at The New Museum (235 Bowery at Prince Street), where maps will be available. The New Museum has also extended its inaugural exhibition, Unmonumental, to coincide with the fair’s closing on Sunday, March 30.
A number of foreign cultural organizations will also hold events throughout the week, including curator–guided tours of “Under Pain of Death” at the Austrian Cultural Forum New York, an exhibition of The Florence & Daniel Guerlain Collection at the French Embassy, and the Dark Fair at Swiss Institute, co–hosted by the Consulate General of Switzerland.
