NYC & Company Names Repertorio Español Culture Spot for September
NYC & COMPANY NAMES REPERTORIO ESPAÑOL CULTURE SPOT FOR SEPTEMBER
—Monthly Program Promotes Cultural Tourism Throughout the Five Boroughs—
New York City (August 30, 2011)—NYC & Company, New York City's marketing, tourism and partnership organization, today named Repertorio Español as Culture Spot for September, the City’s monthly cultural program that encourages local and visitor exploration by spotlighting a different arts organization each month. Located at the historic Gramercy Arts Theatre on 27 Street and Lexington Avenue in Manhattan, the company was founded in 1968 to introduce the best of Latin American, Spanish and Hispanic-American theater to NYC. Today, Repertorio Español serves as the most active Latino theater in the United States, currently showing more than 350 performances of 15 productions each year. In honor of being designated NYC & Company Culture Spot for September, Repertorio Español will offer visitors who buy one ticket a second one for $1 from September 1 to 30. The Culture Spot program, produced by the NYC & Company Foundation, promotes cultural tourism in all five boroughs by inviting visitors to discover cultural opportunities.
“New York City attracts visitors from many different Hispanic nations,” said Annie Bergen, Vice President of Arts and Cultural Programs at NYC & Company. Repertorio Español provides a wide range of Spanish-language productions showcasing the great classical theater tradition from these nations. There’s nowhere else in Manhattan where you can see a play by Spain’s Federico García Lorca, a work by an up-and-coming Hispanic-American playwright or an adaptation of a great South American novel all in the same month.”

Throughout the month, event highlights at the Repertorio Español will include a stand-up comedy show; performances of their longest running play La Gringa, a Puerto Rican comedy; Ana en el Trópico, a Pulitzer Prize–winning play by Nilo Cruz; and El Quijote, a vibrant adaptation of Miguel de Cervantes’ masterpiece.
