NYC & COMPANY AND QUEENS TOURISM COUNCIL INVITE NEW YORKERS AND VISITORS TO DISCOVER QUEENS THIS AUGUST

—Summer Promotion Kicks off at Shea Stadium on July 25; Events Include US Open, Chili Crab Festival and Queens Theatre in the Park—

New York City (July 24)—NYC & Company, the marketing and tourism organization for the City of New York, and the Queens Tourism Council invite residents and visitors alike to Discover Queens this August. The annual summer promotion highlights tops events and attractions throughout Queens. Home to more than two million people, Queens is a thriving borough and a top destination for art, culture and sports with many activities that make summer in New York City such a popular time of year.

"New Yorkers and visitors alike should take advantage of the exciting events in Queens this summer," said NYC & Company CEO George Fertitta. "These tremendous opportunities are just another example of our city's endless sights and attractions, and we are pleased to highlight these great activities as a part of our consistent efforts to promote all five boroughs."

The highly anticipated summer promotion kicks off with Discover Queens Night at Shea Stadium on Wednesday, July 25, as the New York Mets defend their National League East division title. Fans at the game also will enjoy newly added express train service on the 7 line into Manhattan after the game.

Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, the borough's 1,255-acre flagship park, will host a number of events, including:

  • JP Morgan Chase Latino Cultural Festival: Through August 5 the event, located in the Queens Theatre in the Park, brings together many of the finest song and dance artists from the Spanish-speaking world to Queens.

  • The 17th annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival races will take place on Meadow Lake on August 4 and 5. More than 120 dragon boat teams will compete for trophies and cash prizes.

Other events taking place throughout Queens in August include:

  • Warm Up, the acclaimed series of live music and DJ acts presented by P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, an affiliate of the Museum of Modern Art. The series takes place Saturdays through September 1, 3pm to 9pm.

  • Passport Fridays hosted by the Queens Museum of Art. The weekly international outdoor film, dance and music series runs Fridays through August 24.

  • The 4th Annual Tiger Beer Singapore Chili Crab Festival at Riverview in Long Island City on August 19. The event features foods from Singapore and Southeast Asia.

Topping the month will be the US Open tennis tournament, a favorite event for tennis fans in New York City and around the world. The annual tournament brings together some of the world's greatest tennis players to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park. This year's tournament will take place from August 27 through September 9. The qualifying rounds, which are free and open to the public, take place August 21 through 24. Arthur Ashe Kids' Day, a tennis and music festival for families, will take place Saturday, August 25.
