MAYOR BLOOMBERG KICKS OFF WEEK OF NEW YORK CITY ARTS EVENTS

The Armory Show, Art Show and Many Other Art Fairs and Exhibitions are Expected to Draw More than 60,000 Attendees and Generate More than $40 Million in Economic Activity

 

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, NYC & Company CEO George Fertitta, Armory Show Founder and Vice President Paul Morris and President of the Art Dealers Association of America Lucy Mitchell-Innes today kicked off a week of arts-related activities and events taking place in New York City from March 2 to March 7. Shows and art fairs throughout the five boroughs, including The Armory Show and The Art Show, are expected to draw more than 60,000 attendees and generate more than $40 million in economic activity in New York City. Other art shows and fairs taking place include: Volta NY, Pulse, Scope New York, Verge, Red Dot, Moving Image, Independent and Fountain. Last year, a record 48.7 million people visited New York City, and more than 20 million of them participated in a cultural activity during their stay. Joining the Mayor at the announcement, which took place at the opening of The Armory Show at Piers 92 & 94 in Manhattan, were Cultural Affairs Deputy Commissioner Margaret Morton, Armory Show Executive Director Katelijne De Backer and Museum of Modern Art Director Director Glenn D. Lowry.

“New York City hosts some of the world’s most exciting arts events every year, and the growing number of shows that run the first week of March – anchored by The Armory Show and the Art Show – have become a highly anticipated annual affair,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “World-class cultural events continue to be one of the things that draw people to New York City. Last year more than 20 million of the record 48.7 million people that visited New York City participated in a cultural activity.”

The 13th annual Armory Show will take place March 3 to March 6 at Piers 92 and 94, featuring 274 blue-chip contemporary and modern art galleries from 31 countries. Its opening preview on March 2 will support The Museum of Modern Art’s Acquisition Fund with an after party at the MoMA including a live performance by acclaimed singer-songwriter Kate Nash.

The 23rd annual Art Show, organized by the Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA), is the longest running national art show and will take place March 2 to March 6 at the Park Avenue Armory. The Art Show returns with 70 American galleries; 30 of which will present solo artist booths. The Art Show’s gala preview on March 1 benefits The Henry Street Settlement, a New York City agency that delivers a wide range of social service, healthcare and arts programming to more than 50,000 New Yorkers each year.

Throughout the week, many public events around the City will be highlighting various museums, galleries and non-profit organizations in different neighborhoods organized in partnership with the Armory Show, under the umbrella of Armory Arts Week. These include Uptown and Museum Mile (March 1st), Soho Night (March 3rd), Long Island City Night (March 4th), Chelsea Day and Brooklyn Night (March 5th), and the Lower East Side/Downtown Night (March 6th).

It is our pleasure to introduce these galleries and curators, collectors and press from central and south America to the rich cultural diversity of the New York art world at the fair and with Armory Arts Week, which highlights museum and gallery exhibitions, artist studio and private collection visits along with the other nine extraordinary art fairs that fill the week.”
