NYC & Company News for the Travel Trade — December 2014

New in NYC

Taylor Swift Named New York City's New Global Welcome Ambassador
New York has always been a city that opens its arms wide to newcomers. Now pop superstar Taylor Swift, who moved from Nashville to the City this year, is sharing her enthusiasm for her new home with the world as the City's Global Welcome Ambassador. Her new song "Welcome to New York" sets the tone for our worldwide tourism campaign, and Swift shares what she loves about the City in a series of videos on nycgo.com.

One World Observatory Now Accepting Group Reservations
One World Trade Center, America's tallest building, has opened its doors for business—and its One World Observatory is accepting group reservations in advance of its grand opening in spring 2015. Expect breathtaking panoramic views of NYC, New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty from about 1,250 feet above street level. Travel professionals can book groups of 20 or more now (individual tickets won't be available until early 2015).

Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital Opens to the Public
Once the largest public health facility in the country, the historic hospital buildings on Ellis Island were shuttered and abandoned 60 years ago. Now they are reopening to the public for guided tours of the mortuary, autopsy room and laundry building, among other areas, along with a special exhibition, Unframed — Ellis Island, by French artist JR. Spots for these "hard hat" tours are limited and have already sold out through 2014, but reservations can now be made for January through May. (Keep in mind that walking surfaces at the complex may be uneven and that there are no elevators.)

Itinerary Idea

B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
A Times Square institution, this music venue and supper club books top names in blues, R&B and rock and roll while serving a menu of tasty American standards. Within the club is blues bar Lucille's Grill, where visitors can dine and hear live local acts every night without paying a cover. Groups also love the Beatles Brunch on Saturday and the Gospel Brunch on Sunday, when the Harlem Gospel Choir raises the rafters. Group rates, VIP packages and private rentals are all available.
